Is your dog one of those that is so excited to get outside that he runs out the door in front of you? Don’t worry if so, because I have some good tips on stopping this problem for you. Happily, you can easily learn how to correct this behavior with some practice.
- Start this training with your house’s inner doors-not the front door. Since the front door is too tempting, it is a lot easier to being the training with an inner door. A dog with this behavior problem will try to get ahead of you so he can pass through the door before you can. So, counter his move by first commanding him to sit and then command him to stay using your firm commanding voice along with the appropriate hand signals. When he gets in the desired position be sure to give him lots of praise. Make sure he is relaxed in the sit position long enough that is not acting like a coiled spring, ready to launch up and run out the doorway. OK, when he relaxes, go ahead and open the door. He will probably get up and try to go through the door, once he sees it open. Don’t get upset when this happens, as it will take some work to correct this behavior problem. Just keep repeating the work with sit and stay until he waits to be told to move to the door.
- Now that you have him remaining in sit and stay position, you can open the door a little wider-just enough for you to slip through. By only opening the door a little bit, that opening will be less tempting for him to bolt through. He may try to get up from his sit and stay position, but quickly return him to his spot and again command him to sit and stay. Keep working on this exercise until you can pass through the door without him leaving the sit position.
- Now you are ready to try out the results at the front door-this is the ultimate test. Since he knows fun and adventure wait for him through that door, he will probably be much more eager to cross through it. Be sure you are ready by placing his leash on him before you go to the front door. If your dog is a large dog, try putting the handle of his leash around the doorknob to control any lunges out. Not only will the doorknob trick stop him in his tracks, he’ll have some food for thought before trying that again. If he tries to get out, just go back to the previous step.
- Keep repeating the training several times daily until it is well learned. It is a good idea to continue this training even after he has show you he knows to wait for an invitation-it certainly doesn’t hurt to keep reminding him. Training your dog to stop at all curbs is also an important part of boundary training for your dog.
So, as you can see, it is a fairly easy process to teach your dog not to run through doorways. Obviously, if you haven’t already obedience trained your pet, you can see that is an important priority in order for you and your dog to have the best time together.
