Cats like to have their own houses which offer them hours of activity as well as safe and warm places to rest. There are many different designsof cat houses you can buy, but it is relatively basic and possible to build a cat house yourself. By doing your own project yourself, you have the advantage to transform exactly what you need for your space and your cat or cats.

You will need the following paraphernalia, which you can purchase at your local hardware store: One 4′x8′ sheet of 3/8″ plywood, three 2″x4″x8″ studs, one box of 5/8″ wood screws and carpet remains. Divide the plywood and the each stud in half and then take each piece and cutsaw them in half again. There should be a total of 8 plywood pieces each 2×2 in size. This will be used for the outer walls, floors and the roof of the house. Cutting the studs will result in twelve parts that are each 2′ in length. These will form the base to adherethe plywood to. Use a staple gun or glue to fasten the carpet pieces to the plywood. The carpet covering provides a place for your cat to to take care of his need to scratch and stretch his claws, sparing your furniture.

Congratulations! Your cat can now enjoy his or her new home. This construction is not slated to be used as an outdoor cat house since materials used are not waterproof. You may choose the house for use outdoors by the adding a cover in the form of a triangle. This will require extra studs and plywood covered with roof shingles so any moisture will run off without affecting the house.

The house to be used outdoors should not have carpet on the walls because moisture trapped in the fabric will eventually cause the plywood to rot. For outdoor use you may replace the carpet with a water sealant to increase the life span of the home.

A safe and warm place for your cat to hang out does not have to be excessive nor pricey. Add your own individual touch and construct what is best for your pet and yourself.
