Cats have been objects of interest to people around the world for a long time. First domesticated then worshipped in ancient Egypt , later bred and exported abroad, cats became loyal companions and objects of admiration.
The Broadway Musical “Cats” is an excellent example of how these animals can influence artists in different periods of time.
Tolstoy even told the tale of a cat who was critical to his story “Master and Margarita”; Sir Winston Churchill firmly believed that cats were important companions and always had his pal Jock in the room when meals were to commence.
Sir Isaac Newton created the cat door, or cat flap, so that his feline friends could come and go as they wished without letting too much light into his laboratory. Invented in the 17th century, door flap is still a much needed article to help cats circulate in and out of the house.
Nikola Tesla, a prodigious inventor was first struck with question “What is electricity?” in early childhood while petting his cat Macak. The repeated contact of his hand with the cat’s fur produced sparks, which led Tesla to make astonishing discoveries in the realm of mechanical and electrical engineering!
Cat’s gracious movements, the mesmerizing eyes and the hypnotizing purr are appealing to everyone. You can even find cat fancier clubs just for cat lovers as well as salons and pet clothing lines that cater to your feline’s needs. People appreciate pets such as cats so much, that sometimes they go on shopping sprees just to please them and purchase items like the frontline for cats.
Cats aren’t only aesthetically pleasing; they also possess some therapeutic values. A study done in 2002 at the State University of New York (K, Allen, J. Blascovich, and W.B. Mendes) discovered that being exposed to a cat and petting a cat can significantly lower a person’s blood pressure. In their article entitled “Cardiovascular reactivity and the presence of pets, friends, and spouses: the truth about cats and dogs”, they provide evidence on the way cats help moderate reaction to stress and improve one’s health.
Cats are low maintenance, house animals, that is one of the reasons for their popularity in North America. The American Veterinary Medical Association in 2007 stated that in the United States there are over 82 million felines being kept as pets. Wikipedia states that cats typically live longer if they live exclusively indoors. They are less exposed to bacteria and diseases, are safe from cat fight injuries and are not exposed to risks caused by motor vehicles. Whether or not to have an indoor cat is a personal decision that depends on different factors. You definitely need to love your cat. Cats we adopt are our responsibility. Do not let them down.
Sigmund Freud once said, “Time spent with cats is never wasted.”
